چکیده

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes blindness in elderly, affecting macula retina and resulting vision loss. There are two types AMD, wet dry, both which cause visual impairment. Wet AMD called neovascular (nAMD) characterized by formation choroidal vessels (CNVs) macula. nAMD can be treated with intravitreal injections vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors, help improve vision. However, approximately half patients do not achieve satisfactory results. Subretinal fibrosis often develops late nAMD, to irreversible photoreceptor contributing Currently, no treatment exists for subretinal fibrosis, molecular mechanisms fibrous tissue following lesions remain unclear. In this review, we describe clinical features secondary nAMD. Myofibroblasts play an essential role development fibrosis. This review summarizes latest findings on cellular pathogenesis discusses potential therapeutic strategies control future.

Molecular mechanisms of subretinal fibrosis in age-related macular degeneration.

Subretinal fibrosis is a result of a wound healing response that follows choroidal neovascularization in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor therapy has become a standard treatment that improves visual acuity in many nAMD patients, unsuccessful treatment outcomes have often been attributed to the progression of subretinal fibrosi...

In vivo imaging of retinal pigment epithelium cells in age related macular degeneration.

Morgan and colleagues demonstrated that the RPE cell mosaic can be resolved in the living human eye non-invasively by imaging the short-wavelength autofluorescence using an adaptive optics (AO) ophthalmoscope. This method, based on the assumption that all subjects have the same longitudinal chromatic aberration (LCA) correction, has proved difficult to use in diseased eyes, and in particular th...

[Autologous transplantation of retinal pigment epithelium in age related macular degeneration].

Retinal pigment epithelial dysfunction is believed to be the main cause of many debilitating retinal diseases of which age-related macular degeneration is the most common. In this disease, the retinal pigment epithelial dysfunction leads to photoreceptors damage causing severe vision loss. The retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch's membrane suffer cumulative damage over lifetime, which is thoug...

Slow progression of exudative age related macular degeneration associated with hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium

RATIONALE  Choroidal neovascular (CNV) lesions in younger patients are often accompanied by the appearance of a surrounding ring of pigment that is associated with disease regression or slowed disease progression. In older patients with age-related macular degeneration (AMD), however, hypertrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is known to occur but has not previously been reported to b...

Fluorescent pigments of the retinal pigment epithelium and age-related macular degeneration.

The major hydrophobic fluorophore of the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is A2E, a pyridinium bis-retinoid derived from all-trans-retinal and phosphatidyl-ethanolamine. The accumulation of fluorophores such as A2E is implicated in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disease associated with the deterioration of central vision and a leading cause of blindness in the eld...
